AD 286-93) and
Allectus (c. AD 293-6) have gained much publicity. This began in 2010
with the discovery of The Frome Hoard of 52,503 Roman coins, the
largest cache of Roman coins ever found in Britain in a single pot. The
coins have been saved for the Museum of Somerset at Taunton and should
be published by the British Museum in the next two years. Because the
hoard contains around 850 coins of Carausius, it enables us to carry out
a major re-appraisal of the reign of Britain’s ‘forgotten emperor’,
whose history can be told through some fine examples of medallic art
that even include references to Virgil. More recently, Carausius and his
‘henchman’ Allectus have come into sharper focus as a result of
'Brexit' and this talk will outline the nature of the 'Breakaway
British Empire' under Carausius and Allectus, how it began, how it
faired and how it ended.</span></span></span></span></span></b></span></b></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span><span><b><span><b><span><span><span><span style="color: red;"><span style="color: black;"> </span></span></span></span></span></b></span></b></span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span><span><b><span><b><span><span><span><span style="color: red;"><span style="color: black;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Ancient coins have long fascinated generations of collectors by virtue of their beauty, the stories they tell, and for the unique insight they give into the history of the time in which they were made. They can be held, felt and examined without the need for visiting a museum – they are, quite literally, living history. David Sear’s three volume guide is intended to give a general background to the fascinating world of ancient coins, looking back more than 26 centuries to the lands of the eastern Mediterranean, at how coins were designed and produced, and at how they can reveal so much to us today of the time in which they were produced. David Sear is among the most notable numismatic authors writing today; his seminal texts have become the standard handbooks for collectors of ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coinage. His Introductory Guide is intended as an approachable and informative introduction to the hobby, and is a must for anyone interested in the history of the ancient Greek and Roman world.<br /></b></font></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></div>Yorkshire Numismatic Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17850400578716969160noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-983941293243600611.post-78130245238028698312020-02-27T12:46:00.002-08:002020-02-29T12:05:07.370-08:00Coinage of the Ionion islands and Malta under British ProtectorateLecture<br />

lecture programme commenced with Tony Abramson’s review of the
early days of <i>The Yorkshire Numismatic Fellowship </i>followed by
a brief introduction to early Anglo-Saxon coins. Adrian Marsden gave
the social history of a number of 17th century tokens issuers and<span style="font-family: Courier New, serif;">
</span>Richard Abdy gave a brief survey of Roman coppers in
Britain. in <i>Are not two sparrows sold for an as</i>? </span></span></span>

<span style="font-family: "franklin gothic book" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Recent
archaeological work at Rendlesham, Suffolk has recovered thousands of
coins, representing material from the Roman to the Post-Medieval
periods. These have been precisely recorded across a landscape, which
has also been the subject of a number of other archaeological
techniques. The site provides an opportunity to consider coinage over
the long term in a rural environment. It also offers a chance to
think across periods, comparing and contrasting approaches and
conclusions. </span></span>

<div class="western" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Seventeenth-century
tokens have, over the last few years, become a popular area of
collecting. It isn’t hard to</span><span style="font-size: x-small;"> understand why
this has become the case – as well as furnishing attractive
examples of 17</span><span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span><span style="font-size: x-small;">
century art with a wide range of interesting designs, the issuers
themselves can be traced in the historical records and sometimes
prove to have led interesting lives. This talk will show the sort of
research that can be carried out and will focus on the lives of some
of the Norfolk issuers.</span></div>

<div class="western" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">It
is commonplace to say there was a 'big problem over small change' in
antiquity due to the limited technology available
for manufacture and supply. With Roman Britain being an
island at the edge of a vast empire, the logistics were as hard
as they could get. This talk focuses on the copper as, the humblest
coin generally available in Britain in the early centuries
of Roman rule. How were they made and used in Roman society?
More specifically, how did they get here and which types were
the Britons likely to encounter - as no doubt many such
types may still be encountered at this weekend event!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;">The
aim of the talk is to provide novice collectors with an introductory
overview of the material known as paranumismatica. Tokens and medals,
ranging in date from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries will
be discussed and illustrated by examples with a Yorkshire provenance.
Within this broad range of material, much of which
remains unstudied, there are many potential themes for a collection

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">From
the coinage reform of Edgar (c.973) until the Conquest in 1066 (and
well beyond) the coinage shows a uniform design template: on the
obverse the king's 'portrait'; on the reverse a cross, plain or
ornamented, to facilitate the division of coins into cut halfpennies
and farthings. Between 973 and 1066 the type changed at regular
intervals (six years, later 2-3 years) and there are 25 substantive
types, struck at more than 60 mints. The king's 'portrtait'
frequently copies a fourth-century Roman clean-shaven diademed bust,
though 'Anglo-Saxon' elements increasingly occur: crowns, pointed
helmets, beards. This talk illustrates some of the types alongside
their Roman or Byzantine prototypes. All the types shown can be found
at the Harrogate Fair.</span></span></div>

The earliest edition in the Society's archives is 1951 (Second Series, vol. 1, pt. 1). Leeds Museum's archive also starts at this point. It's possible the previous copies were lost when Leeds Museum was hit by a bomb, but Michael must have had access to other copies.Yorkshire Numismatic Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17850400578716969160noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-983941293243600611.post-24682336717710702932019-02-06T10:24:00.003-08:002019-02-10T09:45:20.764-08:00Chris Comber - Great Loss To NumismaticsChris Comber<br />
<br />
YNS salutes the death of Chris Comber, a suave gentleman with a happy <br />
disposition. A stalwart of BANS, he was the leading authority in his <br />
field of Tudor hammered coinage and his passing represents another great <br />
loss to numismatics.<br />

YNS will hold a Congress at the Old Swan, in parallel to the
Harrogate Spring Fair, 15-16 March 2019, to celebrate its 110th
year. A number of speakers, including John Philpotts, Tony Abramson,
Barrie Cook, Adrian Marsden, Frances Simmons, Richard Abdy, Richard
Fynes, Rob Tye and Pam West will illustrate their chosen topic by
reference to a dozen or so readily available coins, which the
audience can then search out among the traders present at the fair.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0.18cm; margin-top: 0.18cm;">
The appeal will be broad, placing coins in their historical context
and conversely illustrating history through coinage. We will promote
the event to collectors, historians, detectorists, and local
residents with the aim of offering engaging talks spread throughout
the fair, introducing newcomers to the delights of collecting and
providing a stimulus to dealers to continue attending the fair.

<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="_GoBack"></a>Michael
Metcalf</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
It is with great
sadness that the Society learned of the death of YNS member
Emeritus Professor David Michael Metcalf who died on 25 October
2018. Professor Metcalf was Keeper of the Heberden Coin Room in
the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford from 1963 and a Professorial Governing
Body Fellow of Wolfson from 1982 to 1998 and an Emeritus Fellow from
1998 to 2018. </div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
He was a prolific
author and speaker in several numismatic fields including Anglo-Saxon
coinage, where his seminal <i>Thrymsas and Sceattas in the Ashmolean
Museum Oxford</i> (1993-4) remains a landmark publication, built on a
then unparalleled corpus of finds, in a previously largely neglected
field.
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
He was happy to
speculate on various aspects of coinage in the hope that discussion
would be stimulated, and better arguments would prevail. He gave
encouragement and guidance to many collectors and students of
numismatics and was a prolific correspondent, typically answering
letters by return post.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
He was
characteristically mild-mannered and perceptive, handling difficult
situations, such as Elizabeth Pirie’s deeply controversial
arrangement of Northumbrian stycas, with great tact and sensitivity,
though he was quite capable of taking a robust approach.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
His passing represents
a major loss to the world of numismatic and beyond.<br />

<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "calluna sans" , serif;">This book
presents the author’s digitization of Pirie’s substantial yet
flawed corpus of 9th-century Northumbrian ‘stycas’. This
database, enhanced by data from elsewhere, is compared by location
with the artefactual database known as VASLE (created at the
University of York, 2008) to demonstrate that the co-occurrence of
coins and portable artefacts defines monetary evolution in
Northumbria. Additionally, the author presents a new periodization
and reveals the previously disparaged gold shillings of York to have
been issued by Bishop Paulinus, a disruptive finding chronologically,
with wider consequences. Northumbria benefited increasingly, both
monetarily and fiscally, as the face value of coins fell. Other
conclusions include the idea that Northumbrian coin production was
erratic; that the Yorkshire Wolds were more highly monetized than the
surrounding lowlands, indicating a more enterprising culture; that
</span><span style="font-family: "calluna sans" , serif;"><i>styca</i></span><span style="font-family: "calluna sans" , serif;">
hoards represent episcopal expropriations; and that there were
significant changes in settlement and economy in the central
lowlands. This work demonstrates that monetization reflected northern
independence, innovation and enterprise.</span></span></div>
